How do we respond to Japan's total, heartbreaking chaos? I've been part of WER for 23 years, but even that length of time has not prepared me … or anyone else for that matter … to know how to meet so many urgent needs after massive earthquakes, a tsunami, volcanic activity and the apocalypse of nuclear disaster. Ports in northern Japan are not open, and roads are destroyed. Access roads to thousands of victims are demolished. Almost every box of relief supplies reaching victims is carried by huge helicopter. Thousands of Japanese children have watched their lives be uprooted, distorted, washed away, and butchered beyond belief. Millions of Japanese have lost hope. Our task is to help restore hope in the midst of an Apocalypse. Japan's people are showing tremendous courage in the midst of pure terror that will prove far worse than Three Mile Island or Chernobyl. But "courage" is not the same as "hope".
